Jewel Cave National Monument is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join their interpretation team as an Interpretive Intern for the summer season. This position is funded by the Black Hills Parks & Forests Association (BHPFA) and offers a unique opportunity to work at the world's third-longest cave. As an intern, you will receive professional training and supervision from the NPS interpretation team, gaining real-world experience in visitor services and public education within the National Park Service system. The role is based at Jewel Cave National Monument in South Dakota and involves significant interaction with the public. $16/hour + $300 boot/pant stipend. 40 hours/week, Mon-Fri or Tue-Sat, from mid/late May through early August. Housing included for non-local applicants. The intern will be responsible for leading Scenic and Discovery tours underground, interacting with thousands of summer visitors. Additional duties include staffing the visitor center information desk, delivering patio talks, and assisting with special events like Junior Caver Day on July 25. This internship provides a practical foundation for those pursuing careers in public lands management, environmental education, or the National Park Service. You will be expected to represent the agency professionally while managing visitor safety and providing high-quality interpretive programs from day one.

Key Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age to qualify for provided housing. Ability to lead Scenic and Discovery tours in an underground cave environment. Capability to staff the visitor center information desk and provide accurate information to visitors. Willingness to deliver educational patio talks to diverse audiences. Assist in the planning and execution of Junior Caver Day activities. Commit to a 40-hour work week schedule (Mon-Fri or Tue-Sat). Availability to work from mid/late May through early August. Strong public speaking and interpersonal communication skills. Interest in natural resource management, interpretation, or environmental education. Physical stamina to conduct walking tours in a cave setting.
