ADVOCATE ACCESS TO JUSTICE (2 POST) @ WOMEN LEGAL AID CENTRE (WLAC)

WLAC is seeking an Advocate for its donor-funded Project on Access to Justice, focused on serving refugees and asylum seekers in coordination with UNHCR and MoHA. This role involves providing essential court representation and legal counselling to ensure effective access to justice and protection of rights under Tanzanian law. The successful candidates (two posts available) will primarily be based in Kibondo and Kasulu Districts, but the project also covers Nduta and Nyarugusu Refugee Camps, and Dar es Salaam.

Key responsibilities include handling and documenting diverse legal aid cases (civil, criminal, family, administrative), conducting vital community legal awareness and rights education sessions, and coordinating with courts, police, and various protection actors. The Advocate must diligently maintain accurate case files, contribute to project reporting, and actively promote Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD), gender equality, disability inclusion, and Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) principles across all legal services provided.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB)
  • Admission to the Bar or eligibility to practice law in Tanzania
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience providing legal aid or legal services
  • Proven experience preferably in humanitarian or refugee contexts
  • Strong knowledge of Tanzanian laws, human rights, and refugee protection frameworks
  • Ability to provide effective court representation and legal counselling to vulnerable populations
  • Experience handling and documenting legal aid cases in accordance with donor requirements (e.g., UNHCR)
  • Ability to conduct community legal awareness sessions and rights education activities effectively
  • Commitment to WLAC's PSEA (Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) and Safeguarding policies
  • Strong skills in accurate case file maintenance, data collection, and project reporting
